Home Bakery & Cake Business

A home bakery lets you start small under cottage food laws, prove demand with pre-orders, and grow into custom cakes, weekly drops, markets and eventually a storefront. Pricing correctly and collecting payment upfront are what separate a hobby from a business.

The business, explained

How a home bakery business really works.

What this business is

You bake and sell cakes, cookies, cupcakes, bread or pastries. Many bakers start at home under their state or local cottage food rules, sell through pre-orders and pick-ups, then add farmers' markets, wholesale to cafes, or a storefront.

  • Custom celebration cakes: highest ticket per order.
  • Weekly drops: a small menu, pre-ordered, baked on set days.
  • Micro bakery: sourdough and bread subscriptions.
  • Markets and pop-ups: cash flow and exposure.
  • Wholesale: cafes, coffee shops and caterers.
  • Storefront: once demand and cash flow are proven.

Who pays you and why

People buy celebrations (birthdays, weddings, baby showers), treats and quality bread. They pay premium prices for something personal, beautiful and delicious they cannot get at a supermarket.

How the money works

Price every item from ingredient cost, packaging, your time and overheads, then add profit. A common check is ingredient cost multiplied by about 3, but custom cakes need your time priced in properly. Collect full payment before the pickup day.

  • Custom cakes and tiered cakes.
  • Cupcakes, cookies and dessert boxes.
  • Bread and sourdough subscriptions.
  • Classes and decorating workshops.
  • Wholesale and cafe accounts.

What it costs to start

A beginner home bakery can be equipped for roughly $500-$1,200 (a digital scale, quality sheet pans and a stand mixer have the biggest impact), plus licences, labels and packaging.

Legal (US and UK)

US: cottage food laws differ by state: what you can sell, labelling rules, sales caps and whether you need a permit or kitchen inspection. Check your state before you sell.

UK: register as a food business with your local council at least 28 days before you start trading, follow food hygiene rules and get a food hygiene rating inspection.

Honest pros and cons

  • Pro: start from your own kitchen with little money.
  • Pro: beautiful products are perfect for Instagram and TikTok.
  • Con: underpricing is the most common mistake.
  • Con: weekends and holidays are your busiest times.
  • Con: legal limits on home food sales vary by area.

Example math (illustration, not a promise)

Six custom cakes a week at $95 plus 20 cookie boxes at $35 is about $1,270 a week. After ingredients and packaging (around 30%), that is roughly $890 before your other costs.

No money? Start anyway

How to fund a home bakery business with little or no money.

Test from home under the right food rules, a shared commercial kitchen, market stalls or pop-ups before you sign a lease. Pre-orders fund your first ingredients.

1. Start lean with what you already have

Use your phone, laptop, car and basic tools. Offer one service or product first and buy only what your first few customers need.

2. Pre-sell and take deposits

Let customers fund your start: founding-member offers, pre-orders and deposits pay for kit and stock before you spend your own money. Always set a real start date and offer refunds if you can't deliver.

3. Keep your job and start on the side

Evenings and weekends first. Your salary pays the bills while the business proves itself, so you never have to borrow to live.

4. Government-backed start-up loans

Small loans with support, made for new businesses.

  • US: SBA microloans: up to $50,000 through local nonprofit lenders, often with free business coaching.
  • UK: Start Up Loans (British Business Bank): £500 to £25,000 per person at a fixed 6% a year over 1 to 5 years, with free mentoring.

www.sba.gov www.startuploans.co.uk

5. Free advice and mentoring

Free help with business plans, loan applications and pricing.

  • US: SCORE mentors and your local Small Business Development Center (SBDC) are free.
  • UK: Your local Growth Hub is free, and The King's Trust supports 18 to 30 year olds starting a business.

www.score.org www.kingstrust.org.uk

6. Grants and competitions

Grants for starting a for-profit business are rare and competitive, but local and sector grants and start-up competitions do exist. Real grants never ask you to pay a fee.

  • US: Check your state and city economic development office. Grants.gov is mostly for non-profits and research.
  • UK: Check your local council and Growth Hub for current schemes.

7. Crowdfunding

Rewards crowdfunding (Kickstarter-style pre-orders) suits products. Equity crowdfunding suits businesses that can grow big.

  • US: Rewards: Kickstarter, Indiegogo. Equity: regulated crowdfunding portals such as Wefunder and Republic.
  • UK: Rewards: Kickstarter, Crowdfunder UK. Equity: platforms such as Crowdcube.

8. Friends and family

Put every amount in writing: loan or share, repayment plan, and what happens if it doesn't work. Only take money people can afford to lose.

9. Equipment finance, leasing and buying used

Spread the cost of kit, vans or machines, or buy second-hand. Compare the total amount repayable, not just the monthly payment.

10. Angel investors and partners

Only for businesses that can grow big. Investors take a share of your business in return.

  • UK: UK investors may get tax relief through SEIS and EIS if your company qualifies.

www.gov.uk

Borrowing is a risk. Only borrow for things that clearly earn money back, never to cover living costs, and read the full terms. Avoid high-interest credit cards and payday loans for start-up costs. This is general information, not financial advice. The kit includes a funding video module and ready-to-use funding templates (pre-sale offers, loan summaries, grant answers, crowdfunding copy).

Step-by-step roadmap

Where to start, and what comes next.

30 steps in six phases. Phase one is open below; every step has a checklist, and members get the linked lessons, templates and tools.

1. Decide and plan

Week 1

Know exactly which home bakery you are opening, who it serves and what it costs.

Choose your business model

Decide your start: custom celebration cakes, weekly treat drops, a sourdough micro bakery, markets and pop-ups, or wholesale to cafes. Most bakers start with pre-orders from home.

  • Watch the 'Start here' module
  • Pick one model to start (you can add others later)
  • Write down why this model fits your money, time and skills
Check demand where you live

Open Google Maps and search 'custom cakes near me'. List the top 10 competitors, their prices, review counts and what customers complain about in their reviews. Gaps in those complaints are your opening.

  • List 10 competitors with prices and ratings
  • Read their 1-3 star reviews and note repeated complaints
  • Note which services have long waits or no local provider
Pick your signature service and ideal client

Pick one signature product and one type of customer (for example bento cakes for birthdays, sourdough subscribers, or wedding dessert tables).

  • Choose one signature service to be known for
  • Describe your ideal client in one sentence
  • Pick 3 services for your launch menu
Write a one-page business plan

One page is enough: who you serve, what you sell, your prices, how clients find you, what it costs and your 90-day goal. The Blueprint template walks you through it.

  • Fill in the one-page plan template
  • Set a 90-day revenue goal
  • Decide your weekly working hours
Set your startup budget and break-even

Use the startup calculator to price your kit, licences, insurance and marketing. Typical starting range for this business: $500-$1,200 for equipment, plus licences, labels and packaging. Then work out how many orders a month cover your costs.

  • List every startup cost
  • Calculate monthly fixed costs
  • Work out your break-even number of orders

2. Make it legal and set up

Weeks 2-3

Be legally able to take money, insured, and ready to book clients.
