Tutoring & Education Business

Tutoring is a low-cost, high-trust business with demand every school year: parents pay for confidence, exam results and calm evenings. You can start online this week with what you already know, then grow by specialising, running small groups and hiring tutors.

The business, explained

How a tutoring business really works.

What this business is

You help students learn: primary reading and maths, secondary school subjects, exam preparation, entrance tests, adult learners and English as a second language. Great tutoring businesses sell a plan and visible progress, not just hours, and keep students for years.

  • One-to-one tutoring, online or in person.
  • Small-group sessions and homework clubs.
  • Exam preparation: US SAT, ACT, AP; UK 11+, GCSE, A-level.
  • Early reading and phonics for young children.
  • Adult learners, career changers and English-language learners.
  • A tutoring company: you match students with tutors you hire and train.

Who pays you and why

Parents who are worried about exams, homework battles or a child losing confidence; families preparing for competitive school entry; homeschooling families; adults returning to study. They pay for a trusted person, a clear plan and regular updates they can see.

How the money works

Most tutors charge per session or sell monthly plans and packs of sessions. A weekly student can stay for several years, and exam season adds intensive blocks. Tutoring companies earn the difference between what parents pay and what tutors are paid.

  • Weekly one-to-one sessions and monthly plans.
  • Exam intensives before test seasons.
  • Small groups and homework clubs (lower price, more students per hour).
  • Entrance-exam programmes over several months.
  • Online courses and resource packs once you have a proven method.

What it costs to start

Very little: a laptop, a good headset, an online whiteboard, a scheduling and payment tool, insurance and a background check. Many tutors start with under $500 or £400.

Legal and practical

US: private tutoring rarely needs a licence, but get liability insurance and background checks for every tutor, and follow child-safety best practice. UK: register as self-employed with HMRC, get a DBS check (self-employed tutors can apply for a basic check; an enhanced check needs a registered body or agency), follow safeguarding best practice and UK GDPR for student data. Never promise guaranteed grades.

Honest pros and cons

  • Pro: tiny start-up cost; online means you can teach anywhere.
  • Pro: loyal, long-term clients and strong word of mouth.
  • Pro: meaningful work that changes students' confidence.
  • Con: your hours are after school and in exam season, so evenings get busy.
  • Con: income is capped by your hours until you add groups or tutors.
  • Con: summer can be quiet unless you run holiday programmes.

Example math (illustration, not a promise)

Twenty weekly students at $50 is about $4,000 a month. Add two small groups and exam intensives, or hire tutors and keep a margin on each session, and the business grows beyond your own hours.

No money? Start anyway

How to fund a tutoring business with little or no money.

Start mobile or at the client's place, buy kit for your first 3 services only (used is fine), and take deposits so customers pay for materials before you do.

1. Start lean with what you already have

Use your phone, laptop, car and basic tools. Offer one service or product first and buy only what your first few customers need.

2. Pre-sell and take deposits

Let customers fund your start: founding-member offers, pre-orders and deposits pay for kit and stock before you spend your own money. Always set a real start date and offer refunds if you can't deliver.

3. Keep your job and start on the side

Evenings and weekends first. Your salary pays the bills while the business proves itself, so you never have to borrow to live.

4. Government-backed start-up loans

Small loans with support, made for new businesses.

  • US: SBA microloans: up to $50,000 through local nonprofit lenders, often with free business coaching.
  • UK: Start Up Loans (British Business Bank): £500 to £25,000 per person at a fixed 6% a year over 1 to 5 years, with free mentoring.

www.sba.gov www.startuploans.co.uk

5. Free advice and mentoring

Free help with business plans, loan applications and pricing.

  • US: SCORE mentors and your local Small Business Development Center (SBDC) are free.
  • UK: Your local Growth Hub is free, and The King's Trust supports 18 to 30 year olds starting a business.

www.score.org www.kingstrust.org.uk

6. Grants and competitions

Grants for starting a for-profit business are rare and competitive, but local and sector grants and start-up competitions do exist. Real grants never ask you to pay a fee.

  • US: Check your state and city economic development office. Grants.gov is mostly for non-profits and research.
  • UK: Check your local council and Growth Hub for current schemes.

7. Crowdfunding

Rewards crowdfunding (Kickstarter-style pre-orders) suits products. Equity crowdfunding suits businesses that can grow big.

  • US: Rewards: Kickstarter, Indiegogo. Equity: regulated crowdfunding portals such as Wefunder and Republic.
  • UK: Rewards: Kickstarter, Crowdfunder UK. Equity: platforms such as Crowdcube.

8. Friends and family

Put every amount in writing: loan or share, repayment plan, and what happens if it doesn't work. Only take money people can afford to lose.

9. Equipment finance, leasing and buying used

Spread the cost of kit, vans or machines, or buy second-hand. Compare the total amount repayable, not just the monthly payment.

10. Angel investors and partners

Only for businesses that can grow big. Investors take a share of your business in return.

  • UK: UK investors may get tax relief through SEIS and EIS if your company qualifies.

www.gov.uk

Borrowing is a risk. Only borrow for things that clearly earn money back, never to cover living costs, and read the full terms. Avoid high-interest credit cards and payday loans for start-up costs. This is general information, not financial advice. The kit includes a funding video module and ready-to-use funding templates (pre-sale offers, loan summaries, grant answers, crowdfunding copy).

Step-by-step roadmap

Where to start, and what comes next.

30 steps in six phases. Phase one is open below; every step has a checklist, and members get the linked lessons, templates and tools.

1. Decide and plan

Week 1

Know exactly which tutoring you are opening, who it serves and what it costs.

Choose your business model

Decide where to start: one-to-one online (lowest cost, widest reach), in-person at home or a local venue, small groups and homework clubs, or exam and entrance-test programmes. Most tutors start one-to-one and add groups.

  • Watch the 'Start here' module
  • Pick one model to start (you can add others later)
  • Write down why this model fits your money, time and skills
Check demand where you live

Open Google Maps and search 'tutor near me'. List the top 10 competitors, their prices, review counts and what customers complain about in their reviews. Gaps in those complaints are your opening.

  • List 10 competitors with prices and ratings
  • Read their 1-3 star reviews and note repeated complaints
  • Note which services have long waits or no local provider
Pick your signature service and ideal client

Pick a focus: a subject, an age group, an exam (SAT/ACT, 11+, GCSE, A-level) or a need (reading confidence, adult learners, English-language learners).

  • Choose one signature service to be known for
  • Describe your ideal client in one sentence
  • Pick 3 services for your launch menu
Write a one-page business plan

One page is enough: who you serve, what you sell, your prices, how clients find you, what it costs and your 90-day goal. The Blueprint template walks you through it.

  • Fill in the one-page plan template
  • Set a 90-day revenue goal
  • Decide your weekly working hours
Set your startup budget and break-even

Use the startup calculator to price your kit, licences, insurance and marketing. Typical starting range for this business: Under $500 / £400. Then work out how many sessions a month cover your costs.

  • List every startup cost
  • Calculate monthly fixed costs
  • Work out your break-even number of sessions
