Personal Training & Online Coaching

Personal training can start with a certification, insurance and a handful of clients. The strongest fitness businesses mix in-person sessions with online coaching, focus on a clear type of client, and keep people for months through progress tracking and relationships.

Session price$50-$100+typical US in-person
Online coaching$100-$500+/moper client
Insurance~$100-$300/yrindependent trainer liability
Certification$599-$1,499ISSA to NASM price range
The business, explained

How a fitness coaching business really works.

What this business is

You help people reach fitness goals through coached sessions, programs and accountability. You can train clients in a gym, a private studio, their homes or parks, or online through an app with check-ins.

  • In-gym independent trainer: train clients in a gym that allows it (often both must be members, or you pay rent).
  • Private studio: your own small space; more control and cost.
  • Mobile/home training: go to the client.
  • Online coaching: programs plus weekly check-ins through an app; scalable.
  • Group and bootcamp classes: lower price per person, more people per hour.

Who pays you and why

People pay for results, structure and accountability: weight loss, strength, confidence, pain-free movement, sport performance, pre- and postnatal fitness. Clients stay when they feel seen and see measurable progress.

How the money works

Common US ranges: in-person sessions often $50-$100+, monthly packages $300-$1,000+, online coaching $100-$500+ per month. Online and group work let you earn more per hour.

  • 1:1 sessions and packages.
  • Monthly online coaching.
  • Small-group and bootcamp classes.
  • Programs (12-week plans) and challenges.
  • Corporate wellness classes.

What it costs to start

A recognised certification (for example NASM, ACE or ISSA in the US, or a Level 3 qualification in the UK), CPR/first aid, liability insurance and a coaching app. Liability insurance for independent trainers is often around $100-$300 a year.

Legal and practical

Use a health questionnaire (PAR-Q) and a signed agreement, stay within your scope (no medical or dietetic advice), and get paid before sessions start.

Honest pros and cons

  • Pro: low startup cost and a clear path online.
  • Pro: monthly recurring income.
  • Con: income tied to hours until you add online and group work.
  • Con: client drop-off if you do not track progress and build relationships.
  • Con: early mornings and evenings.

Example math (illustration, not a promise)

Twenty in-person clients on $400 monthly packages is $8,000 a month. Add 25 online clients at $150 a month and that is another $3,750 with far fewer hours.

No money? Start anyway

How to fund a fitness coaching business with little or no money.

Start mobile or at the client's place, buy kit for your first 3 services only (used is fine), and take deposits so customers pay for materials before you do.

1. Start lean with what you already have

Use your phone, laptop, car and basic tools. Offer one service or product first and buy only what your first few customers need.

2. Pre-sell and take deposits

Let customers fund your start: founding-member offers, pre-orders and deposits pay for kit and stock before you spend your own money. Always set a real start date and offer refunds if you can't deliver.

3. Keep your job and start on the side

Evenings and weekends first. Your salary pays the bills while the business proves itself, so you never have to borrow to live.

4. Government-backed start-up loans

Small loans with support, made for new businesses.

  • US: SBA microloans: up to $50,000 through local nonprofit lenders, often with free business coaching.
  • UK: Start Up Loans (British Business Bank): £500 to £25,000 per person at a fixed 6% a year over 1 to 5 years, with free mentoring.

www.sba.gov www.startuploans.co.uk

5. Free advice and mentoring

Free help with business plans, loan applications and pricing.

  • US: SCORE mentors and your local Small Business Development Center (SBDC) are free.
  • UK: Your local Growth Hub is free, and The King's Trust supports 18 to 30 year olds starting a business.

www.score.org www.kingstrust.org.uk

6. Grants and competitions

Grants for starting a for-profit business are rare and competitive, but local and sector grants and start-up competitions do exist. Real grants never ask you to pay a fee.

  • US: Check your state and city economic development office. Grants.gov is mostly for non-profits and research.
  • UK: Check your local council and Growth Hub for current schemes.

7. Crowdfunding

Rewards crowdfunding (Kickstarter-style pre-orders) suits products. Equity crowdfunding suits businesses that can grow big.

  • US: Rewards: Kickstarter, Indiegogo. Equity: regulated crowdfunding portals such as Wefunder and Republic.
  • UK: Rewards: Kickstarter, Crowdfunder UK. Equity: platforms such as Crowdcube.

8. Friends and family

Put every amount in writing: loan or share, repayment plan, and what happens if it doesn't work. Only take money people can afford to lose.

9. Equipment finance, leasing and buying used

Spread the cost of kit, vans or machines, or buy second-hand. Compare the total amount repayable, not just the monthly payment.

10. Angel investors and partners

Only for businesses that can grow big. Investors take a share of your business in return.

  • UK: UK investors may get tax relief through SEIS and EIS if your company qualifies.

www.gov.uk

Borrowing is a risk. Only borrow for things that clearly earn money back, never to cover living costs, and read the full terms. Avoid high-interest credit cards and payday loans for start-up costs. This is general information, not financial advice. The kit includes a funding video module and ready-to-use funding templates (pre-sale offers, loan summaries, grant answers, crowdfunding copy).

Your unfair advantage

How to stand out and grow faster.

Most people copy what everyone else does. These are the moves that make customers choose you.

Pick a specific clientPostnatal mums, over-50s, busy dads, brides. A clear niche makes marketing obvious and lets you charge more.
Measure everythingClients who can see strength numbers, photos and measurements stay longer. Review progress every 4-6 weeks.
Hybrid coachingCombine one in-person session a week with app-based programming. More value for the client, more capacity for you.
Relationship firstThe most common reason clients leave is not feeling a relationship with their trainer. Check in between sessions.
Challenges that convertA 6-week challenge with a clear outcome brings in groups of new clients at once.
Content that teachesShort videos answering real client questions build trust faster than workout clips alone.
Corporate wellnessOne company contract can fill several weekly classes.
The 40-hour ruleEvery hour not booked with a client is an hour for getting clients.
Referral rewardsReward clients who bring friends with a free session or merch.
Keep learningSpecialist certifications (pre/postnatal, strength, nutrition coaching) justify premium pricing.

Step-by-step roadmap

Where to start, and what comes next.

30 steps in six phases. Phase one is open below; every step has a checklist, and members get the linked lessons, templates and tools.

1. Decide and plan

Week 1

Know exactly which fitness coaching you are opening, who it serves and what it costs.

Choose your business model

Decide how you will start: independent trainer in a gym, mobile or home training, a small studio, online coaching, or a hybrid. Many coaches start in person and add online clients within months.

  • Watch the 'Start here' module
  • Pick one model to start (you can add others later)
  • Write down why this model fits your money, time and skills
Check demand where you live

Open Google Maps and search 'personal trainer near me'. List the top 10 competitors, their prices, review counts and what customers complain about in their reviews. Gaps in those complaints are your opening.

  • List 10 competitors with prices and ratings
  • Read their 1-3 star reviews and note repeated complaints
  • Note which services have long waits or no local provider
Pick your signature service and ideal client

Pick one ideal client (for example new mums, over-50s, busy professionals, athletes or complete beginners) and one clear result you help them get.

  • Choose one signature service to be known for
  • Describe your ideal client in one sentence
  • Pick 3 services for your launch menu
Write a one-page business plan

One page is enough: who you serve, what you sell, your prices, how clients find you, what it costs and your 90-day goal. The Blueprint template walks you through it.

  • Fill in the one-page plan template
  • Set a 90-day revenue goal
  • Decide your weekly working hours
Set your startup budget and break-even

Use the startup calculator to price your kit, licences, insurance and marketing. Typical starting range for this business: $800-$3,000 for certification, insurance, basic equipment and an app. Then work out how many sessions a month cover your costs.

  • List every startup cost
  • Calculate monthly fixed costs
  • Work out your break-even number of sessions
