E-commerce Store (Shopify & Amazon)

E-commerce means selling physical products online through your own store (for example Shopify), marketplaces (Amazon, Etsy, TikTok Shop) or both. The winners pick a product people already want, make it better or better-branded, and master one traffic channel before adding more.

The business, explained

How a e-commerce business really works.

What this business is

You source or make products, list them in an online store or marketplace, drive traffic, and fulfil orders. The business is product + traffic + operations; weak product or weak traffic sinks it.

  • Private label: your brand on a manufactured product.
  • Dropshipping: a supplier ships directly; low inventory risk, lower margins and control.
  • Handmade or your own manufacturing.
  • Marketplace sellers: Amazon (including FBA), Etsy, TikTok Shop.
  • DTC brand: your own Shopify store with ads, content and email.

How the money works

Profit per order = price - product cost - shipping - platform/payment fees - ad cost per order. Know your contribution margin and the maximum you can pay to acquire a customer before spending on ads. Repeat purchases and email make the math work.

  • Product sales.
  • Bundles and subscriptions.
  • Upsells and cross-sells.
  • Wholesale to retailers.

What it costs to start

Dropshipping and print-on-demand can start with a few hundred dollars (store subscription, samples, test ads). Private label needs inventory, often thousands. Always order samples before you sell.

Legal and practical

Register the business, handle sales tax/VAT correctly, follow product safety and labelling rules for your category, and write clear shipping and returns policies.

Honest pros and cons

  • Pro: sell worldwide 24/7; scalable.
  • Pro: many free and low-cost tools.
  • Con: paid ads are competitive; you must understand your numbers.
  • Con: supplier, shipping and inventory problems happen.
  • Con: marketplaces can change fees and rules.

Example math (illustration, not a promise)

A $40 product with $12 product cost, $6 shipping, $2 fees and $12 ad cost per order leaves $8 per order. 30 orders a day is $240 a day profit, before returns and overheads, which is why lowering ad cost with content and email is key.

No money? Start anyway

How to fund a e-commerce business with little or no money.

Use print-on-demand, pre-orders or small test batches so you only pay for stock that's already selling.

1. Start lean with what you already have

Use your phone, laptop, car and basic tools. Offer one service or product first and buy only what your first few customers need.

2. Pre-sell and take deposits

Let customers fund your start: founding-member offers, pre-orders and deposits pay for kit and stock before you spend your own money. Always set a real start date and offer refunds if you can't deliver.

3. Keep your job and start on the side

Evenings and weekends first. Your salary pays the bills while the business proves itself, so you never have to borrow to live.

4. Government-backed start-up loans

Small loans with support, made for new businesses.

  • US: SBA microloans: up to $50,000 through local nonprofit lenders, often with free business coaching.
  • UK: Start Up Loans (British Business Bank): £500 to £25,000 per person at a fixed 6% a year over 1 to 5 years, with free mentoring.

www.sba.gov www.startuploans.co.uk

5. Free advice and mentoring

Free help with business plans, loan applications and pricing.

  • US: SCORE mentors and your local Small Business Development Center (SBDC) are free.
  • UK: Your local Growth Hub is free, and The King's Trust supports 18 to 30 year olds starting a business.

www.score.org www.kingstrust.org.uk

6. Grants and competitions

Grants for starting a for-profit business are rare and competitive, but local and sector grants and start-up competitions do exist. Real grants never ask you to pay a fee.

  • US: Check your state and city economic development office. Grants.gov is mostly for non-profits and research.
  • UK: Check your local council and Growth Hub for current schemes.

7. Crowdfunding

Rewards crowdfunding (Kickstarter-style pre-orders) suits products. Equity crowdfunding suits businesses that can grow big.

  • US: Rewards: Kickstarter, Indiegogo. Equity: regulated crowdfunding portals such as Wefunder and Republic.
  • UK: Rewards: Kickstarter, Crowdfunder UK. Equity: platforms such as Crowdcube.

8. Friends and family

Put every amount in writing: loan or share, repayment plan, and what happens if it doesn't work. Only take money people can afford to lose.

9. Equipment finance, leasing and buying used

Spread the cost of kit, vans or machines, or buy second-hand. Compare the total amount repayable, not just the monthly payment.

10. Angel investors and partners

Only for businesses that can grow big. Investors take a share of your business in return.

  • UK: UK investors may get tax relief through SEIS and EIS if your company qualifies.

www.gov.uk

Borrowing is a risk. Only borrow for things that clearly earn money back, never to cover living costs, and read the full terms. Avoid high-interest credit cards and payday loans for start-up costs. This is general information, not financial advice. The kit includes a funding video module and ready-to-use funding templates (pre-sale offers, loan summaries, grant answers, crowdfunding copy).
